What you will see, ticketing explained and getting a good entrance deal

Escape Room at The London Dungeon
Escape from the Room at The London Dungeon

The London Dungeon is a more gruesome version of Madame Tussauds.

The attraction consists of a series of set scenes reproducing chilling aspects of medieval London. Expect lots of darkness, dripping water, skeletons, caged rats, tolling bells etc to add to the atmosphere.

Naturally there are scenes of torture in all its variations. It's hilarious fun and it’s sometimes a bit scary.

All are brought to life with special effects very well done, originally conceived for film and TV. Actors add life to the displays and among other things may sentence you personally to death.

Why not combine The London Dungeon tickets with a 1950s classic Routemaster bus and river cruise?

Need more scares? Further down the Thames is another popular chilling London attraction: The London Bridge Experience.

The London Dungeon - what you will see

The London Dungeon what you will see
Journey through Tudor London & witness its grisly past

The London Dungeon experience is an approximately 90-minute walk through the various attractions & rides. You'll see dungeons, experience highlights (or lowlights) of London's history through exceptional stages and special effects experiences.

You will be part of a group moving from show to show, guided by professional actors. The shows are based on real London history and legends (minus the boring bits). You'll get up close and personal with sinister characters including Jack the Ripper and infamous barber of Fleet Street, Sweeney Todd.

Taking the role of a traitor conspiring with Anne Boleyn, you will join her on her final journey on the Tyrant Boat Ride, along the Thames to The Tower of London, where you'll meet your fate. Rile at the smells and sights of the plague and experience the doomed fate of Henry VIII’s victims as you ride through Traitors' Gate to your death.

In the Torture Chamber you'll discover all sorts of hideous devices for pain and punishment - not one for the faint hearted!

Other zones feature the Great Fire of 1666, the Plague Doctor, The Curse of the Witch and the Courtroom.

Right near the end of your visit is a heart-stopping ride: Drop Dead Drop Ride. Test your nerve as you become a victim at the gallows. At the mercy of the hangman, experience the final moments of terror and the spike of adrenaline as the floor opens and you plummet into darkness!

After all that excitement you might want to take a drink at the Tavern, a proper Victorian style bar, for a well earned tipple or mocktail.

Experiences

The London Dungeon tickets: understanding your options (important)

London Dungeon for families
For families: plenty of interactive stuff

London Dungeon Tavern
Added attraction: have a ghostly drink!

Because of the numbers wanting to visit The London Dungeon, controlling the flow of people entering the building is important for safety as well as your comfort.

If you just turn up on the day looking for a ticket at peak times you may have a very, very long wait - at least an hour, or more.

There are several entrance ticket options giving different levels of priority for admittance all at very different prices.

1) Walk-up tickets

If you turn up on the day you probably get the worst deal of the lot.

You'll have to wait the longest time to gain entrance and you will pay the full entrance price which can be 30% more expensive than purchasing tickets in advance. At peak times slots can be sold out well in advance with hours to wait to gain entrance.

2) Advance purchase standard tickets (purchased from The London Dungeon website)

By purchasing your tickets in advance direct from The London Dungeon website as well as getting up to a 24% discount on your ticket price (against walk-up entry) you also enjoy potentially much less queuing.

There are two online advance prices through the official website: next day (a few pounds cheaper than walk-up) and 4-day in advance (a few pounds cheaper again).

At purchase you select a 15 minute window in time when you want to gain entrance. When you arrive at the attraction you join the queue for your entrance time slot.

For standard entry queue times vary depending on how busy the attraction is. At weekends and peak times the queue can get up to 50 minutes.

The price of tickets bought online for The London Dungeon are variable; you will normally find two different prices on the same day but you should still be able to find quite a few tickets available at the lower price.

Rates are variable according to season and day of the week. Peak rates apply during school holidays and at weekends.

If you are looking for next-day tickets then your cheapest price is likely to be a third-party seller such as Discount London. Here you can match the price Merlin only offer for their 4-day advance tickets. For tickets purchased 4 days or more in advance, ticket prices are the same whichever option you choose.

3) Advance purchase VIP tickets (purchased from The London Dungeon website)

For a stiff premium, that can be 2-3 times the price of the standard on-line ticket you can also pre-purchase a priority ticket that should get you into The London Dungeon immediately.

Unlike the standard tickets there is no 15-minute window in time you select to gain entrance. You can arrive at any time (during opening hours) of the date you select.

4) Combination tickets combining The London Dungeon with 4 other major attractions in London

The London Dungeon is owned by a company called Merlin who own and operate several other major attractions in London.

Big City Saver tickets allow you to combine The London Dungeon with 1, 2 or 4 of the remaining London Merlin attractions:

Madame Tussauds, The London Eye, The London Dungeon, Shrek's Adventure! London and SEA LIFE London Aquarium.

5) Third party discounters and combination tickets

For stand-alone tickets for The London Dungeon the best price guarantee offered by The London Dungeon is pretty good (especially if visiting outside peak periods). If you find somebody offering lower priced tickets than London Dungeon let us know!

However, very few visitors buy The London Dungeon tickets in isolation.

Great deals from third parties of all kinds are available - the best are those where you cannot identify how much exactly you are paying for The London Dungeon tickets hidden with in the package - thus neatly bypassing The London Dungeon best price guarantee for stand-alone tickets.

The most fruitful places to seek out these great deals are:

- Discounted combination tickets combining two or sometimes up to seven London attractions in one discounted package. Both third party discounters and Merlin who own The London Dungeon offer these.

- London's popular hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses will make available discounted attraction tickets when bought in advance together with their hop-on, hop-off bus tickets.

- There are several London attraction passes and discount schemes where The London Dungeon appears as a supported attraction.

Best price London Dungeon tickets

The benchmark for best price London Dungeon tickets depends upon when you are booking for.

If you are booking for four days ahead then your best price will almost certainly be direct on-line from the official The London Dungeon website linked below (unless you have a separate standalone promotion).

If you are looking for the cheapest next day tickets you may find a company such as Discount London (below) cheaper.

All tickets have varying prices depending on when you visit - including during the actual day you intend to visit. Select different timeslots to see different prices.

Peak periods include school holidays and weekends, so the cheapest off-peak tickets will always be midweek outside school holidays.
