The Plough Pub in front of Holiday Inn M4/J4 Heathrow |
About a mile north of Heathrow Airport the M4 Motorway/Freeway parallels the airport on its way into London from the west of England. Junction 4 of the motorway is a spur that goes direct into the centre of the airport where Terminals 2 and 3 are located.
At this junction there is a cluster of chain hotels and an adjoining village, Sipson, that has some restaurants, pubs and small convenience stores. The hotels here are geographically the closest to Stockley Park Business area.
The hotels here are the Novotel, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn M4/J4 and the Premier Inn M4/J4. All are large chain hotels that can offer very attractive rates, especially at the weekend.
Although at a major junction of a motorway with nothing much else there, there is plenty of parking. Each hotel charges for its car parking facility.
All the hotels are relatively isolated. The only connection with the terminals at Heathrow being the chargeable Heathrow Hoppa hotel buses. Sipson, is a small village 10 minutes' walk away from the hotels where you can escape the airport hotel prices for food and drink to a limited selection of local pubs and restaurants.
About a 15-20-minute walk from the hotels is the Bath Road. For those watching their wallet this is arguably the best place to look for a Heathrow hotel for the independent traveller.
Hotels here have stiffer competition from local food and convenience store outlets and the abundance of cheap, public transport opens up all kinds of possibilities, including free transfers to the passenger terminals. We have a dedicated page of the eastern section of the Bath Road at Heathrow, and for those using Terminal 5, Heathrow hotels on the western section of the Bath Road.

The Plough is situated in front of the Holiday Inn M4/J4, right by its front entrance. It's the first pub or commercial building that people walking from the hotels into Sipson come to. A lot of people get no further.
The Plough has a large and on a nice day inviting beer garden outside. Pub food is available until 10pm.
Burgers £8-9, steaks £15, fish £10, salads £8.
The King William IV pub is a couple of hundred yards further down the road from the Plough Pub situated at the entrance to Sipson village 'proper'. The pub is located at a road junction with a roundabout.
The King William IV has more of a feel of a pub for locals than the Plough. The King William serves English and Thai themed food. The King William stops serving food earlier than the Plough at 9pm.
English and Thai dishes around £10.
Achari Indian Restaurant |
Achari is an Indian restaurant doing the full range of Indian food, just past the King William pub on the opposite side of the road. There is a take away option too with delivery to the hotels.
The fully licensed restaurant cooks sizzling tandoori dishes in its own clay oven, barbecuing meat and fish over flaming charcoal. You'll find balti specialities and medium bhoonas on offer alongside hot madras and vindaloo options.
Various Indian dishes £8-12.
Just a few yards further up the road from the Achari Indian Restaurant is another one called the Zayani Indian Restaurant.
A similar offering than the Achari and also like the Achari offers a take away service.
Various Indian dishes £10-16.
Sipson convenience store |
Almost opposite the Zayani Indian Restaurant is the small convenience store pictured. Sells snacks, drinks, alcohol, sweets/candy and also a cash machine.
The store also is an outlet for selling Oyster Cards and Travelcards.
If you are going into London for sightseeing, using one of these is by far the least expensive way to do this from Heathrow using the London Underground.
See more details below of using public transport.
The local bus that runs through the area is one of London's famous red buses. Transport passes valid for this bus are also valid for the London Underground between Heathrow and Central London and the buses in London too.
222 local Heathrow Airport bus |
Although the hotels at Junction 4 of the M4 are relatively isolated, there is a cheap local bus that goes through the area about every 10 minutes between about 5.30am and midnight.
Currently the bus is sometimes a single deck bus like that pictured right, sometimes a double deck bus.
Going south through Sipson, the bus comes out onto the Bath Road on the other side of Sipson Village. The Bath Road has a much larger variety of shops and services.
Local buses serving Heathrow details
The money no object solution to getting into London for sightseeing is to take the Heathrow Hoppa Hotel Buses to Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 and then get the Heathrow Express train into London Paddington.
For a fraction of the price, you can use the London Underground and have unlimited travel for the day on London's buses and Underground using a Travelcard or Oyster Card.
You can purchase Travelcard and Oyster cards from the Sipson Convenience Store or you can also get them from the Underground ticket offices at Heathrow.
The 222 bus will take you to Hounslow West Underground Station. Hounslow West is in zone 5, the Heathrow underground stations are in zone 6 saving you a little money if you use Travelcards. Bus journeys are zone less on Travelcards so you can use a zone 1-5 Travelcard between Hounslow West and Heathrow hotels even though they are in zone 6.
