Premier Inn Gatwick Airport North Terminal |
Gatwick hotel accommodation is available at competitive prices in all sectors from Bed & Breakfast, through cheap no frills, budget chain hotels to luxury 4-star hotels.
There are about 10 relatively large chain hotels within 1km of the terminals, the rest either double up serving the local towns of Horley or Crawley or offer a 'quiet retreat in the English countryside.'
To make an informed hotel choice at Gatwick the key points are:
Gatwick Airport has two terminals, named North and South connected by a frequent free monorail service.
At the South Terminal is the Hilton London Gatwick Airport, Bloc Hotel and the YotelAir.
At the North Terminal are the Sofitel Gatwick, Hampton by Hilton and the Premier Inn Gatwick North Terminal. It is also possible to walk to the Courtyard Marriott Gatwick and the Premier Inn Airport Way. All other accommodation requires a vehicle transfer.
Many Gatwick hotels have a hotel transfer bus shared with neighbouring hotels. These are not complementary. Fares can vary from hotel to hotel but £3 per person each way is standard with discounts for children.
A handful of the small Gatwick Bed & Breakfast hotels do still offer complementary shuttles, but most, certainly the more competitively priced, charge around £6 per room for an airport transfer. In the last few years a few hotels have stopped their hotel shuttles and offer taxi services. Typically a taxi is in the £8 to £11 range, which for two people isn't that different to the hotel bus services.

Gatwick Airport has flights coming and going on a 24/7 basis. A lot of the hotels, especially the smaller ones do not offer transfer services through the night and are highly variable when these services shut down and start up again. Details are shown on individual hotel pages on this website.
Gatwick room rates are highly seasonal. Gatwick is the main airport for the British flying away to the sun. Prices are higher in summer than in the winter months. Many hotels are cheaper at the weekend than during the week, especially outside the summer months and especially for the 3/4 star hotels that attract a lot of business conference customers. As a general rule of thumb is the cheaper the accommodation the more stable the prices.
There are seven accommodation options within walking distance of the passenger terminals. The Hilton London Gatwick Airport is linked to the South Terminal, the Sofitel Gatwick and the Hampton by Hilton Gatwick are linked to the North Terminal. These three hotels are full service luxury hotels and are normally the most expensive hotels on the airport.
The Premier Inn Gatwick North Terminal is the only budget hotel that you can walk directly into a Gatwick passenger terminal from your hotel. At the South Terminal the novel YotelAir Gatwick offers Japanese style cabins at a similar budget price.
If you are up for a walk of 10 minutes with your luggage exposed to the elements then the Courtyard Marriott Gatwick like the Premier Inn Airport Way has good footpaths from the South and North terminals respectively. Both these hotels also run hotel shuttle buses for which a fee is levied.
A detailed guide to staying in the airport complex at Gatwick
There is a wide choice of no frills chain hotels at Gatwick for people that want a clean, modern bedroom to get a good night's sleep and somewhere safe to put their luggage and do not want to pay for services like health clubs, room service etc they would never use.
The leading budget hotel chain in the UK is currently Premier Inn. If you are not familiar with the chain they are a high quality value chain, similar to at least a good Holiday Inn Express. For many British leisure travellers the Premier Inn is the benchmark hotel they always compare other options with.
At Gatwick Airport, Premier Inn have no less than 4 hotels servicing the airport which you can either walk to the passenger terminals from or catch an airport shuttle bus.
Comparison of Premier Inn hotels at Gatwick
The main challenger to Premier Inn's dominance of budget chain sector is Travelodge, and Ibis.
As you will see from the table below there are other value, mid-range hotel chains at Gatwick and it is worth mentioning that at weekends especially some of the four star hotels are able to compete on headline room rates with the budget hotels.
Like at most international airport hotels they do tend to have expensive add-ons for food, drink and use of facilities. If you want to get away from that restriction, then a good strategy is to find accommodation in the nearby town of Horley or Crawley, only a couple of miles from the airport complex.
Horley is a small residential town just to the north of the airport where there is a wide range of hotels from small bed and breakfast to large chain hotels. Although, for the most part a sleepy residential town, the town centre has a great range of restaurants, pubs and supermarkets plus all the shops that can provide you with anything you need including a launderette.
Crawley to the south of the airport, is a larger, more commercial town compared to Horley. The town centre is a regional shopping centre and transport hub and there are nightclubs and a leisure park with cinema complex and bowling alley.
