Leicester Square accommodation consists of mostly large 4- and 5-star hotels, most of them chains. Prices are high in this area, reflecting the popular location, right in the heart of theatreland.
The only real budget option is the Travelodge Covent Garden, one of the few modern buildings amongst the old, with highly volatile prices but on occasions, you can get good promotional rates at slow periods of the year.
Most of the 4- and 5-star hotels emphasise the traditional nature of their hotels, being a blend of chandeliers, afternoon teas and period architecture with all the latest modern facilities in your room.
All around Leicester Square are theatres, nightclubs and of course restaurants of all kinds and budgets. It is the main area in London that tourists drift to in the evening to have a drink and people watch if they are not taking in a show.
Leicester Square and Covent Garden just north of Trafalgar Square is where you will find most of the West End theatres and much of the nightlife in central London.
There are individual West End theatres well outside this area but most of them are within a 10-min walk of Leicester Square. Leicester Square is also the main venue for film premières in London and is where you will find a cluster of discount theatre ticket outlets. In the block north of London is China Town, often billed as the largest in Europe.
Leicester Square offers many shops, bars, restaurants (many offering pre-theatre menus) and nightclubs as well as being famed for being London's cinema-land. Other attractions include Europe’s biggest sweet shop, M&M's World, and the world's biggest LEGO Store.
Note: Leicester Square is some distance from many popular sightseeing places like the Tower of London, St Paul’s etc.
The area is not served well for airport transfers, only the London Underground to Heathrow Airport provides direct access to any of London's airports.
If you are on a tight budget, look elsewhere. If you like the area but find the prices prohibitive then the Bloomsbury hotel district, just a 10-min walk north of Leicester Sq & Covent Garden is a good alternative with lower hotel prices.
Room rates in the Leicester Square & Covent Garden area are uniformly high throughout the year with a combination of business and leisure customers complementing each other’s peaks.
Availability is tightest and room rates highest in May, June, July, September, October and the first half of December.
