The iconic fish and chips is a classic British dish, and you cannot beat a good chippy. Traditionally fish and chips are served in paper, (originally newspaper) or a box to keep the food warm when ordering a takeaway. Of course, fish and chips can be served with extras such as mushy peas and curry sauce and accompanied with tartar sauce, pickled onions, gherkins, tomato sauce and lemon wedges whatever takes your fancy. Upmarket fish and chip restaurants have emerged serving extended menus and a wider range of sustainability caught fish as well as introducing alcoholic beverages.

London’s history with Fish and Chips

Frying fish in batter can be traced back to Jewish immigrants from Portugal and Spain who settled in England, using a method of frying called “Pescado frito” (fried fish). Fish and chips in London is believed to have been introduced in the 1860s when the first fish and chip shop was opened in London’s East End by Joseph Malin who added fried potatoes to the dish, now commonly known as chips. At that time, people traditionally used cheap cod to popularize the dish we know today.

Ranging from classic traditional fish and chip shops to elegant dining establishments, London boasts a wide array of options. Below, we present a selection of the finest fish and chip venues the city has to offer.

Don’t forget to celebrate National Fish and Chip day on the first Friday of June each year. Enjoy!
