Outside London
Bath: A couple of hours west of London by train or coach. The main draw and "must do" are the Roman Baths but there is also a multitude of museums, galleries and other attractions to suit all interests. Very nice city well worth a visit.
Stonehenge: World famous monument west of London. Independently you can combine it with Salisbury by public transport. Many coach tours are just as economical as the public transport option, commonly twinned with Windsor or Bath.
Windsor: On the western edge of London, very close to Heathrow Airport. A full day out can be had. Main draws are Windsor Castle and Eton College. Boat trips, theme park and much else. Great walks available, many in the Queens grounds.
Oxford: Famous for its university and nearby Blenheim Palace,a world heritage site, home of the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Oxford is just an hour or two by coach or train north-west of London.
Stratford Upon Avon: Home of Shakespeare and on the edge of the Cotswolds, a picture perfect district of English villages. Stratford is situated about 80 miles north-west of Central London. Organised coach trips combine with Oxford, Blenheim or Warwick Castle.
Avebury: Only 20 miles from Stonehenge, this is another henge and saxon village. Unlike Stonehenge there is totally free access, you can walk among and touch the stones at all times.
Salisbury: The main visitor attraction of Salisbury is Salisbury Cathedral, one of the finest cathedrals in England and housing one of the original copies of the Magna Carta in the Chapter House. The city centre retains many of its medieval buildings.
Lacock: Lacock is an old wool village dating back to the 13th Century situated between Bath and Stonehenge. The village is a living, breathing village, not a museum but is owned by the National Trust who maintain the village so from the exterior it could be 200 years ago.
Glastonbury: Fascinating town to visit, especially for those interested in the mystic or captivated by the legend of King Arthur and Avalon. A long way to go from London but this quirky, relatively uncommercialised town is a unique place to visit.
Hampton Court: In the suburbs, south-west of London with a direct train service. If you have time you can take a 3 hour river trip from Westminster by scheduled boat and return by train. Plenty to see and do including the maze.
Private
Guided Tours:
If you want to see the places you want to see at a pace you want to go a private tour with an experienced guide makes sense. If you can get a small group together , even better as this option need not cost any more than a scheduled public tour.
