Earls Court is primarily a budget accommodation district at the Western end of Kensington. Much of the accommodation is small independent hotels, some of dubious quality. Having said that there are some very good, more upmarket options sprinkled through the district.

Hotels like the Marriott Kensington, Premier Inn Kensington and Base 2 Stay offer some of the best value in London without sacrificing quality in their respective sectors.

The district is as safe as any in London and is suitable for people looking for value and is particularly convenient for those flying into Heathrow Airport

Earls Court Area
If you look at our Kensington hotel map, you will see Earls Court is at the western end of Kensington. The heart of Earls Court is the Earls Court Road around Earls Court Underground, this is the nucleus of where all the shops and restaurants are.

The Earls Court Road is a one way street, the other way is the Warwick Road which runs parallel, north - south through the district. Earls Court Underground is sandwiched between the two. The Earls Court Road is the western perimeter of London's congestion zone and as a result is often at gridlock with vehicles avoiding paying the London congestion charge.

This doesn't really matter as the London Underground should be the preferred mode of transport for getting around for visitors.

Opposite the Warwick Road entrance to Earls Court Underground Station is Earls Court Exhibition Centre which hosts some of the major exhibitions in London. Years ago it was also a major rock concert venue but nowadays these are found at more modern venues.
Chelsea Football Club is within 10 minutes walk of Earls Court Underground Station and another premiership club, Fulham not too much further.
There are no tier 1 London sights within walking distance of Earls Court. An off beat quirky place to visit though is Brompton Cemetery at the south end of Earls Court by West Brompton Underground Station.

Getting To The Major Sights
You will be using the London Underground to get around. You should be able to get to most places you want to see in Central London within around 20-30 minutes using the Underground.
Most visitors should be purchasing an Oyster Card or Travelcard, the most convenient places in the district to buy from is from the ticket offices of the Underground Stations.

The Piccadilly Line takes you direct into the theatre/entertainment area of Central London whilst the Circle and District Line follows the River Thames and is good for many of the major sights like Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and Tower of London.

None of the popular hop on, hop off tour buses come out to Earls Court. The closest point where you can board one (Big Bus) is at Gloucester Road Underground Station, 5/10 minutes walk away from Earls Court.
Shopping, Restaurants, ATM's, WiFi, Convenience Stores ...
There are no department stores or worthwhile dedicated shops along the Cromwell Road. What you do have is a lot of places supporting the more fundamental needs of the visitor and especially the budget traveller.
Within sight of the front entrance of Earls Court Underground on Earls Court Road you will see most of the global fast food chains, including McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks and independent bakeries and such like. For the budget traveller all the basics are here with launderettes, pubs and small supermarkets available.
Some of the pubs do very good value breakfasts as well as traditional pub grub in the evening.

At the northern end of Earls Court on the Cromwell Road is a large Tesco supermarket open 24 hours.

As well as food (including a salad bar) all the basics you might need like toiletries, non prescription medicines and similar basic needs are available at benchmark low prices.
There is a nice roomy Costa Coffee outlet on the first floor too. There are very few hotel districts in London where you will get a full size supermarket like this on your doorstep.
For sandwiches and snacks, the M&S Simply Food branch just south of the Underground Station has many fans.

Apart from the pubs offering traditional fayre, there are a lot of independent small restaurants offering cuisine's from around the world at prices that won't break the bank.

There are quite a few Internet options around the district that are prominently advertised.
Around the Earls Court Road entrance of Earls Court Underground Station are a choice of banks with ATM's.
Environment
Once you get off the main thoroughfares, Earls Court Road, Warwick Avenue and Cromwell Road the back streets are quite attractive. Most buildings are 4 or 5 storey terraces like that pictured right.

Very few of the hotels are in more modern purpose built buildings, the few exceptions include the Marriott, Premier Inn Kensington (not Olympia) and Ibis.

The streets are kept very clean and its certainly not got the feeling of being run down like so many budget hotel areas the world over.

All in all, if you're watching costs, Earls Court is a very acceptable option to consider for your London stay.

Safety and Side Streets
The Earls Court Kensington area is safe within the normal common-sense precautions applicable the world over. The Underground runs until around midnight and that too is safe to ride late at night.
